WESTWOOD — On Tuesday, Chancellor Gene Block reaffirmed in an address to the university that UCLA will be waste-free by 2020. “Although we are well into the fourth quarter of 2021, I truly believe that our Institute of Environment and Sustainability can make this dream a reality,” Block said after stowing a plastic water bottle in a potted plant. “We have already begun to put fierce, anti-waste measures into practice, such as replacing all landfill bins with those labeled ‘compost.’ If there are no trash cans, there can be no trash,” he stated while tapping his temple. At press time, Block was seen telling students to “just smile more” in promotion of the Depression Grand Challenge 2012.
