WESTWOOD — Reports of student-athletes never taking off their black UCLA backpacks have been on the rise as campus has returned to in-person instruction. “No one could see the backpacks when we were on Zoom, no one could tell we were student-athletes,” said third-year volleyball player McKenzie Johnson as she mounted an electric scooter to get to class 20 minutes late. “Teamwork is a vital part of the sport, and these backpacks are a vital part of the team. You never leave a teammate behind, so we wear them 24/7.” At press time, Johnson was seen running over an underclassman with her electric scooter.
